In a GUI (graphical user interface), a slider (also known as a track bar) is a graphical control element used to set or change a value. They are usually oriented horizontally and serve many purposes. For example, the image shows the playback slider in Windows Media Player, which moves to different parts of a video or audio file.
Slider examples
Examples of slider functions include the following.
- Adjusting mouse cursor sensitivity.
- Changing screen brightness on a laptop or smartphone.
- Increasing color saturation in a photo editing program.
- Turning up headphones or speaker volume.
- Zooming in and out of a document or web page.
A slider may appear similar to a scroll bar. However, sliders differ in that they can manipulate specific elements or values on a web page or program without changing the overall look or screen layout.
