Mil-Spec
Mil-Spec, Mil-Std, or Milspec, is a defense manufacturing standardization used by the U.S. Department of Defense for any products used for maintenance, repair, and operational objectives. The specifications outline the physical characterizations of products and the materials and processes used to make the products. The Mil-Spec process ensures materials made for defense-related use conform to a regimented manufacturing and certification process, for better performance, easier to repair, and less waste.
A couple of examples of Mil-Spec's are as follows:
MIL-STD-1553, outlines the characteristics and functions of a serial data bus.
MIL-PRF-38535, outlines the performance and requirements of integrated circuit manufacturing.
The above examples are some of the thousands of Mil-Spec's available. Mil-Spec's are tested and outlined for products ranging from small computer parts to ammunition production. Mil-spec's are not limited to DOD (Department of Defense) operations and are used by technical organizations and non-government organizations. For example, a computer or laptop classified as a rugged PC was tested and manufactured according to Mil-Spec standardization.
