Pseudoterminal

Abbreviated pty, a pseudoterminal is a text-based software user interface designed to replace the hardware terminal interfaces of the 1970s. The first pseudoterminal was released in 1983 as part of the BSD (Berkeley Software Distribution) 4.2 operating system.
