An E1 is a point-to-point, dedicated, four-wire digital circuit that carries 2.048 Mbps or 32 64,000-bit/s channels.

The E1 was used in European countries and Australia and is similar to North America's T1 line.
E2
The E2 is a communications circuit with four E1s at a speed of 8.848 Mbps. This version was rarely used.
E3
The E3 is a communications circuit with sixteen E1s at a speed of 34.368 Mbps.

E4
The E4 is a communications circuit with four E3s at a speed of 139.264 Mbps.
E5
The E5 is a communications circuit with four E4s at a speed of 565.148 Mbps.
